St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

Did you know that approximately 30 million Americans suffer from a thyroid condition? And it’s estimated that up to half of that population is undiagnosed. While thyroid conditions can happen to anyone, women are five times more likely to be affected. January is National Thyroid Awareness Month, and we are here to break down the basics for you.

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat that’s responsible for producing hormones that affect your heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and other vital organs. When your thyroid produces too little or too many hormones, your body will be disrupted. People suffering from thyroid conditions often report feeling “generally unwell” for an extended period of time—despite consuming a balanced diet and getting proper exercise. Thyroid issues can present in a wide variety of symptoms, most commonly including:

  • Unexpected weight loss or gain
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Dry skin
  • Chronic fatigue or trouble sleeping
  • Bulging eyes or vision troubles
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Changes in memory or ability to concentrate
  • Depression, anxiety, or mood changes
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Joint pain or muscle weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, or if you have a family history of thyroid disease, you should schedule an appointment with your provider to check your thyroid. You could be suffering from one of the following conditions:

Getting an early and proper diagnosis will allow you to start treatment, and get back to living a normal, healthy lifestyle. Our providers at St. Vincent Family Health Center can help, call us at 719-486-0230.
