The Power of Rural Health

This month, as we gather with family and friends on Thanksgiving, I am aware of my gratitude for our team at St. Vincent Health and our rural community. We have the unique privilege of caring for people who are our neighbors and friends.

November 21st is National Rural Health Day. In recognition and with the community of Lake County as our context, I think it is both worthwhile and eye-opening to consider some facts:

  • Nearly 20% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas; 61 million people.
  • Roughly 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals and 900 other hospitals support rural communities; 50% of which are operating with negative margins.
  • 4 out of 5 rural counties (82%) have at least one ambulance desert, being 25+ minutes or more from services.
  • Rural Health clinics are a key component of the rural health safety net with 86% offering free or reduced-cost care and accepting new Medicaid or state CHIP patients.

Providing healthcare in a rural community is a rewarding, yet challenging, opportunity. I appreciate everyone in Lake County who works to improve the quality of life for others.  And I truly admire the staff at St. Vincent Health for being resourceful and compassionate while providing quality care locally.

From my family to yours, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.
